The independent arts festival, Melbourne Fringe takes place from the 18th September to the 6th October, offering a range of different forms including comedy, music, circus and dance.
The events will take place in a myriad of different venues across the cities from tiny bars to high-profile locations. Full details of the line-up is expected to be revealed on the 7th August, but highlights from last year included an opera based on the re-enactment of the British colonisation of Australia, a performance of Sylvia Plath’s work, and a party celebrating 30 years independent art in Melbourne.
The festival also has an awards ceremony at the end of the event, giving out prizes in areas such as Best Experimental Performance, Best Emerging Writer, Original New Circus, and awards in general categories. 2012’s winner of the Best Performance was Show Me Yours, I’ll Show You Mine, a play about a male sex worker.
Throughout the festival, Digital Creatures will also be happening, which is a showcase of work by filmmakers, animators and video artists which will be screened at the Little Creatures Dining Hall in Fitzroy. Any digitally produced or recorded moving image is eligible for entry and there’s a $2,000 cash prize for the best student entry.
The Melbourne Fringe Festival was established in 1982 and attracts well over half a million visitors to the city each year. It’s an open-access not for profit event, which aims to promote independent arts. For more information visit the website: www.melbournefringe.com.au
