Victoria’s Great Alpine Road runs from Wangaratta to Metung, taking about five hours and offering a wealth of places to stop and beautiful views throughout the journey. Along the way you’ll pass the stunning Gippsland Lakes, drive up into the mountain ranges and right down into the valleys below for a truly beautiful look at the many diverse landscapes of this corner of Australia.
Starting from Wangaratta, the first leg will take you to the town of Bright, an hour’s drive away. You’ll be driving through the valleys here, and as you pass the vineyards you’ll soon spot a few to visit for a tour, a tasting, and usually some samples of the local cheeses. There’s also a slight detour to the old gold mining town of Beechworth, and the nearby Mount Buffalo National Par
From Bright, the next leg of your journey sees you through to Omeo, a two-hour trip that passes through leafy alpine forests and fields of wildflowers. Jump out along the way for a walk and a picnic, or simply enjoy the view as you drive up to the charming town itself, where you’ll find a rich heritage and a fantastic base for horse riding and walking excursions around the Alpine National park.
Finally, another two-hour drive from Omeo to your end destination of Metung takes you througha number of food and drink-producing market towns, including Swifts Creek and the brewery town of Bruthen. Once you get to Metung, you’ll be at the perfect spot for exploring the Gippsland Lakes at your own pace, so head off early and get some time exploring this stunning area of Victoria!
