For once Melbourne and Sydney aren’t topping the charts! Adelaide has been voted as one of the top cities to visit in 2014 in a global poll conducted by Lonely Planet.
Adelaide was voted the 10th best city to visit in 2014 due to its quiet beaches, and emerging wine and arts scene. Paris, France topped the list, but there were some other unexpected contenders in the top 10 too, including Riga in Latvia and Trinidad in Cuba. Other cities included Cape Town in South Africa, Zurich in Switzerland, Shanghai in China, Vancouver in Canada, Chicago in the USA and Auckland in New Zealand.
Lonely Planet ranked the city as a great place to visit because even though its long-lived in the shadows of its bigger cities, it’s “been quietly loosening its pious shackles and embracing its liberal foundations.
Adelaide is also changing face in 2014, with a refurbishment of the Adelaide Oval due for completion during the year. Once completed it will connect the city centre with the Oval and beyond.
In the guide it summed up the attraction of the city perfectly: “A gateway to some of Australia’s most accessible wine country, Adelaide is effortlessly chic – and like a perfectly cellared red, it’s ready to be uncorked and sampled.”
It isn’t the first time that Lonely Planet has selected an obscure Australian city; last year Hobart made the top 10. For the full top 10, visit Lonely Planet’s website.
